Lac La Biche County is looking for community groups to help keep the community clean.

LAC LA BICHE - Throughout the month of September, organizations in Lac La Biche County will have the opportunity to keep their communities clean while earning some extra cash by participating in the annual roadside fall cleanup program.

Jihad Moghrabi, marketing and communications manager for Lac La Biche County, said the program is open to local clubs and schools.

“On average, we have more than five community groups sign up for the program annually,” he stated. “The number of people in a group can range anywhere from four to 20.”

According to Moghrabi, groups are assigned a certain amount of kilometers of roadway and are paid depending on whether they are working in an urban or rural area.

“The urban rate of pay is $150 per kilometer of roadway right of way cleaned on both sides. This rate applies to all roadways within five kilometers of the Hamlet of Lac La Biche and the Hamlet of Plamondon,” he explained. “The rural rate is $100 per kilometer of roadway right of way cleaned on both sides, on all other roadways.”

Applications from community groups are being accepted until Sept. 1. Applications must include the organizer’s name and contact information of the organization, the location and requested length of roadway to be cleaned, as well as proof of general liability insurance.

In the more than 20 years since this program first began, Lac La Biche County has found it to be an effective way of promoting environmental stewardship, with residents of all ages and members of local environmental protection groups often taking part.

“This is part of our efforts to clean up our community and keep the environment pristine for future generations,” Moghrabi continued. “We mostly get youth groups such as grads, sports and dance organizations, but others as well.”

Lac La Biche County approves specific cleanup locations prior to the collection start date and provides garbage bags, roadside cleanup signs, disposable gloves, and safety vests upon request.
