LAC LA BICHE - The Canadian 3D Indoor Championships, which was set to take place at the Bold Center in April, has been put on hold. The championships involve archers shooting at 3D foam animals and was going to be hosted by Lakeland Archers from April 16 to the 18, but because of COVID-19 protocols it had to be cancelled.

Rene Schaub, the president of Lakeland Archers and a national archery team coach, says they are still pushing for an archery event come August.

Schaub had a meeting with Archery Canada, and proposed they could do sometime within the last two weeks of August, and he is waiting to hear back to see if the event can take place.

“So now Archery Canada is taking it back to their committee and they’re going to see if they’re okay with that, and if that’s the case they’re going to tell me which weekend is good and we will go from there,” said Schaub.

The three-course event would have brought in a large crowd, says Schaub. The last time they held Indoor Nationals it brought 300 archers from across the country. This time could have been even bigger because archers haven’t been able to participate in any events since the beginning of the pandemic.

“It’s been over a year now since all archery events have been cancelled. So, whoever is able to put one on is going to have a really good success,” said Schaub. “There’s going to be a lot of people out there who are going to want to come and do it.”

Event cancellations has been the name of the game during the pandemic, so Schaub says it was to be expected, but having such a large event get cancelled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19 is still difficult.

“It’s a big thing, and it’s an even bigger thing to lose it, but you can’t get upset,” he said. “Everybody’s in the same boat right now.”

For anyone interested in archery, Lakeland Archers is now able to have people come in and shoot some targets either individually or with a cohort. For more information call 780-623-2228.
