LAC LA BICHE - It was bug’s life in Lac La Biche County for a few hours on July 22, as locals and visitors were given an in-depth and fun education on the diverse insect community that resides in Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park.
The afternoon workshop was hosted by Alberta Parks.
Through exhibits and hands-on instruction, park interpreters taught families about the basic anatomy and life cycle of bugs, pollination habits, as well as the important role they in the park’s ecosystem. Attendees also learned how to identify local species, which include several types of bees, tiger beetles, dragonflies, water bugs, moths and ants.
Youngsters at the event also tried their hand at catching and examining insects and working on craft projects. Parks staff also showed attendees a large group of red admiral caterpillars that within the next month, will transform into butterflies.
