The Lac La Biche and area Scout troops have been keeping themselves quite busy lately.
The Lac La Biche Scout troop has been keeping themselves quite busy lately.
They recently helped out at the Kub Kar rally, held at Jubilee Hall, where the Beavers, Cubs, and even some alumni Cubs, came to race their handmade vehicles. This year's race was extra special, since 2016 is the hundredth anniversary of Cubs. A wide variety of old memorabilia from throughout the Scout years were also displayed. Iā m sure that everyone who participated had a great time. I certainly did.
Along with the Kub Kar races, the Scouts have also enjoyed a fall and winter camp at Churchill park. In these camps, they learned the proper uses of knives, axes and saws, and practiced the art of fire making. They went on short hikes, and even crafted and set off rockets! The camps were a little chilly, and sometimes wet, but everyone had an awesome time. All part of the Scout experience.
In celebration of our founder, Sir Robert Baden Powell, the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Ventures and some Girl Guides, had a torchlight parade down the streets of Lac La Biche in February. The Scouts and Ventures held the big fiery torches, while the rest of us marched proudly behind them. Big shout out to the Lac La Biche police for guiding us safely through town. It was followed with an indoor campfire with singing, skits and hot chocolate.
During the regular meetings of the year, Scouts are usually working on their program or individual badges, which is a sort of award for completing a certain series of tasks. Like the cooking badge, or the navigator badge. Writing this article is part of my "Communicator" badge. The group has also been working on learning their knots. Knots can be used for a lot of things. From rescuing a rock climber, to tying your boat down, which will come in handy when we take our 3 day canoe trip this summer. However, trust me when I say, some of them are NOT easy. (Ha!)
Saturday, April 9th will be the day when all Scout groups are accepting food bank donations, and are also hosting a bottle drive. You can drop off food or bottles at the Bottle Depot, starting at 10:00. If we miss getting to your house, you can call Ken at 623-9789 and we can make sure they get picked up..
In Scouts, we have an unlimited number of events to choose from, and each one creates memories and learning opportunities. People always think Scouts are just a bunch of kids camping and canoeing through the bush. Yes, we do participate in those activities, but it's much more than just that. We sometimes travel to the city, to the Telus World of Science or to an Oil Kings game, or help out the community with a project. It's so, so much more than what people think it is. Even if you're not a really big outdoors person, it's still LOTS of fun. It's not just another camping trip, it's an adventure!
