Two young children were taken to hospital after a school bus was struck by a car this morning on the Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement - and police believe alcohol could have played a role.

Boyle RCMP say a white Chevrolet Impala collided with a school bus at an intersection on the settlement this morning at 8:45. There were eight students - ranging in age from 5-11 - on the bus at the time. Mounties are reporting the car failed to stop at an intersection, collided with the bus, and sent it spinning into the ditch.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene. Two of the eight children were transported to hospital, suffering from minor injuries. Police say the children were released from the hospital later that afternoon.

Police say the woman driving the car, a 31-year-old, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. When she was released she was taken into custody. RCMP say all possible contributing factors related to this collision are being considered; and alcohol is believed to have played a role.

Charges in connection with the crash are pending.
