Safety Days takes over the Bold Center for two big days today and Tuesday- including the Devon Community Safety Night on Tuesday -with displays, information, fun, games and prizes for community members and area students.

The two-day event sees elementary-school kids from across the region go to the Bold Center during the days today and Tuesday to learn about safety from regional companies, agencies and community groups. More than 600 kids will attend daytime sessions, and all community members are welcome to attend Tuesday night’ s Devon Community Safety Night. The community event will feature many of the same attractions, but also offer door prizes and a toonie barbecue supper.

Colleen Pierce, one of the Safety Days organizers, said teaching kids lessons about safety when they’ re still young is the right thing to do. “If they hear this, and hear it again, it’ s a way of reaching them. They’ re like little sponges and they soak it up,” she said.

This year, almost two-dozen companies and organizations are presenting at the event, and will cover a wide variety of topics. Everything from rail safety by CN, to fire safety from the Lac La Biche Regional Fire Services, road safety from the Coalition for the Safer 63/881, and ambulance awareness by Associated Ambulance will be on display.

Safety spokespeople from each participating group will be on hand to answer questions and engage the public for an evening of safety awareness. There will also be door prizes, activities for the families, and a Toonie Supper with vegetarian options.

Pierce said the evening event is worthwhile for the whole family to attend, as it is never too late to brush up on how to keep everyone safe.

“There are so many preventable accidents. All aspects of safety affect everyone... When there’ s an accident, there are human costs, financial costs, so many costs,” she said. “There’ s lots of opportunity for safety education and training.” The Devon Community Safety Night runs from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, April 19 at the Bold Center. It is free-to-attend.

Some of the presenters at the Devon Community Safety Night have put together a little bag of goodies as a prize for a POST contest. We’ ve asked several of the presenters to put their safety message into 3 words. Make the most correct matches and you are entered to win.
