Entries needed for local Junior Citizen of the Year

Do you know a deserving Junior citizen candidate?

No one has entered the  2020 Junior Citizen of the Year nominations in Lac La Biche County yet.

The award is handed out annually during the Christmas Light Up The Night event. Organizers of the COVID-revised plans for the annual Light Up event say the Junior Citizen Award continues to be part of the seasonal celebration ... even if some staples of the winter festival have been sidelined.

While no parade will take place this year due to restrictions on crowd sizes at gatherings, and the lighting of a giant downtown tree will be done virtually to avoid the same crowds, the Junior Citizen of the Year Award is still slated to go ahead. In past year, the junior citizen of the year flicks the switch to light a 35-40 foot tree. Each year, whether the temperatures are mild or freezing, the event draws hundreds of people to the community's downtown. This year, however, those crowds are being frozen-out due to Alberta's COVID-19 precautions that currently restrict any outdoor gathering sizes in rural Alberta.

Organizers who are continuing to put together a number of virtual events and scaled-down festive programming to tie into the Light Up The Night celebration say deadline entries for the Junior Citizen Award are due at the end of the month.

Plans to open up the nominations were announced two weeks ago — but so far no entries have been received.
