Fish derby returns to Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days after 10-year hiatus

The event took place on Beaver Lake on Aug. 2.

LAC LA BICHE – This year’s Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days featured the return of a fish derby – and event that had been on hiatus for a decade.

On the morning of Aug. 2, a large group of people and several boats gathered at Young’s Beach to take part in the fish derby.

At 9 a.m., the boats made their way onto Beaver Lake, with participants spending the day fishing. There were four categories in the 2025 fish derby, perch open, women’s perch, children’s perch, and senior’s perch, with people competing for prizes in these classes.

According to Ian Cloutier, who serves as treasurer for the Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days and Fish Derby Association, the association made the decision to bring back the fish derby after 10 years as there was a lot of community interest for doing so.

For decades, the fish derby was part of the roster of events for Pow Wow Days, which has been taking place annually in Lac La Biche since the early 1960s.

Cloutier, along with Ed Thring, a director with the Lac La Biche Pow Wow and Fish Derby Association, were among those involved with bringing back the fish derby.
