Lac La Biche County has already been featured in a wintertime television show. Now it’ s time to showcase the region’ s summertime potential on the airwaves.

The first of at least two episodes of the outdoor recreation program “The Dimestore Fishermen” filmed in the Lac La Biche area will air at the end of this month.

The episodes will be broadcast just weeks before the show’ s producers revisit the region to shoot more footage for the future.

“The Dimestore Fishermen” is a program that concentrates on fishing adventures across Canada, but also highlights the far-flung communities that the cast and crew visit on their travels to the country’ s best fishing holes.

The show’ s producers visited the Lac La Biche area to film last summer. In between angling excursions on the region’ s numerous bodies of water, they captured a variety of dry-land activities for their show.

“We were there last year at the Mission for Canada Day celebrations,” said Jim Hoey, the show’ s host. “It was really, really special to be amongst everybody. That’ s the nature of our show-to be in Canadian communities and to be able to experience people in their regions doing things the way that they like to do them.”

In addition to the footage gathered at the Canada Day festivities, the episodes are also expected to feature events like the Plamondon Mud Bogs and the Hylo-Venice centenary, as well as local and regional attractions like Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park.

Some local residents, particularly those of the fishing persuasion, should expect to see themselves on television. When it comes to angling, you often can’ t beat local knowledge, Hoey says.

“We have a segment in our show that’ s called ‘Locals Know,’ ” he said. “If I was to come to Lac la Biche Lake and try to out-fish somebody who lives in Lac La Biche, I would probably get schooled. People there know their waters.”

During their time in the local area, Hoey and his fishing partners cast their lines on Lac la Biche Lake and Pinehurst and Jackson Lakes in the nearby Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area. For all that, the fish weren’ t biting as much as they could have been.

“The fishing was very touch-and-go at the time. There was a lot of weather that was inclement,” Hoey told the POST, adding that there were still some tremendous fishing opportunities to be had. “Slow in Lac La Biche County is still some pretty great fishing. Having said that, we’ re coming back again this year and we’ re really excited about that.”

The show’ s producers are expecting to be back in the region in June.

The first episode of “The Dimestore Fishermen” filmed in this area should air on May 30 on NTV Canada’ s Superstation from 11-11:30 a.m., and the following day on Newcap TV from 8-8:30 a.m.

“(Viewers) should be expecting to see us experiencing Lac La Biche County in a very unique way,” Hoey said. “We’ re going to have the opportunity to showcase the beauty of your region, and it’ s really very special there, unquestionably. There’ s a spirit in Lac La Biche County that is very, very special.”
