Pancakes.  Mmmmmm.

Good morning. Get a great start to your Lac La Biche Summer Days Friday and Saturday with a plate of flap-jacks flipped before your eyes by grill-top volunteers with the Lac La Biche Heritage Society.

“They’re flipping great,” says Heritage Society President Mona Frederick, covering both the food and the seniors working the flippers with the same compliment.

Volunteers with the Heritage Society have been serving up the community pancake breakfast for most of the 60-year history of the August long-weekend community celebration. The cooking crew is looking forward to this year’s Lac La Biche Summer Days.

Friday and Saturday breakfasts $5

“We’ve got an army of volunteers ready in the kitchen and on the grills,” said Frederick. “We love to do this and it’s like a well-groomed machine.”

The Friday and Saturday morning menu includes pancakes and sausages, with a morning coffee, tea or glass of juice.  The breakfasts are open to everyone.

It’s just five bucks a plate for adults and kids under six with an adult eat for free.

“We want to make it affordable,” said Frederick, explaining that all funds received go toward community initiatives selected by the seniors. “It stays in the community. We donate to some local organizations each year. It all goes back to the community.”

The flippers get the spatulas moving at 8:30 a.m. for the Friday and Saturday breakfasts. The grills will have their last splash of pancake batter sizzling at 10:30 a.m. Tables for the breakfast mornings will be set up inside the Heritage Centre and outside picnic benches will be set up too.

“It’s so nice to see people come out and socialize over a good meal,” says Frederick.

The Lac La Biche Heritage Society has a membership of about 220 seniors.
