Kian, Coen and Haven Jordan were quite impressed by these gingerbread houses that were on display at the Bold Center on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 23. Each year, Portage College student athletes organize and help out at the gingerbread challenge, which is part of the activities for the Festival of Trees. Chris McGarry photo.

LAC LA BICHE - The 2024 Festival of Trees – which took place at Lac La Biche’s Bold Center over the Nov. 22 weekend – featured plenty of Christmas spirit, including a gingerbread challenge.

For this event, people from the Lac La Biche area entered an assortment of colourful and elaborate confectionaries that were shaped like houses. Many of these creations were covered with candies and sweet delights. Prior to the judging portion of the event, people had the opportunity to check out the houses on display.

There were age, group and people’s choice categories for the gingerbread houses, with participants able to win cash prizes for their works.

The gingerbread challenge is hosted each year as part of the Festival of Trees by Portage College student athletes, who are required to have 30 volunteer hours each.
