Golfers take to greens in support of local health authority, Portage College

There’s nothing quite like hitting the links on a beautifully warm summer’s morning. It’s even more enjoyable when one is doing so to support a great local cause. On Friday, a few hundred golfers from the Lac La Biche region and beyond converged on the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club for the third annual Healthier Communities Golf Tournament.

The annual Healthier Communities Golf Tournament was played at the Lac La Biche Golf Club earlier in July.

Following breakfast, 27 teams – representing some local business as well as those from outside the region who served as sponsors for the event – scattered to the 18 holes to start the competition.

Typically, the Healthier Communities Golf Tournament brings in over $50,000, which is split between the Lac La Biche Regional Health Foundation and Portage College. All funds raised will support the future development of health care services and training opportunities, as well as equipment for healthcare programs at the college, including Primary and Advanced Care Paramedicine, Emergency Medical Responder, and Practical Nursing.

Funds for this years event were mostly raised by several large corporate sponsors from outside the community who are involved in construction and community growth projects throughout the area. Additional local funds were raised by on-course events like a ball-drop bingo and draw prize raffles.

The full day of golf wrapped up with a supper for players at the golf course.
