Hylo Harvest Days draws large turnout, features long list of fun

Hylo Harvest Days, which took place on Aug. 25 and 26, featured a pancake breakfast, parade, live music, and pig catching competition.

HYLO - With the lazy days of summer winding down and autumn just around the bend, the annual Hylo Harvest Days was celebrated Aug. 25 and 26.

The two-day fun-filled festival got underway Friday with a horticultural show and a movie in the park, while Saturday’s list of events got underway with a pancake breakfast followed by a brisket cook-off where eight entries of cooked beef were judged for appearance, taste and other criteria. Two locals – Ryan Manca and Scott Ferguson – walked away with $100 each after winning the competition.

The large crowd that gathered for this year’s edition of Hylo Harvest Days at the Hylo Agricultural Hall, found a spot to watch the customary parade. Throughout the afternoon and into the evening, local artisans and business owners had exhibits set up inside the hall, while outside, there was an abundance of amusements to keep those in attendance occupied, including live music, a beer gardens, bouncy castles, contests, and prize draws.

But that wasn’t all that was on tap for excitement. There was also the King and Queen/Prince and Princess competitions as well as the always hilarious and exciting pig catching competition, where participants of all ages try their hand at catching - and holding onto - pigs of various sizes.

Hylo Harvest Days has been happening since 1990. The original version of the popular two-day festival was held in local fields where, using antique equipment, farmers would re-enact a harvest from days gone by. At that time, members of a local seniors group baked fresh bread and soup that was served during the events.
