LAC LA BICHE – From June 1 until Sept. 1, officials with Lac La Biche County will be conducting routine annual gas meter changeouts on residential properties.

According to Daniel St. Jean, a utilities foreman with Lac La Biche County, natural gas meters need to be changed out periodically to ensure readings stay accurate and there is compliance with regulatory requirements.

“The typical service life of a residential gas meter is seven to 10 years,” said St. Jean.

Gas meters measure the quantity of gas passing through them using oscillating diaphragms inside chambers of known volume. Each time a diaphragm fills and empties, it drives a mechanical linkage, which rotates a gear mechanism connected to a mechanical index that registers the amount of gas consumed.

Meter replacements take about 30 minutes, on average, to complete.

“This work includes isolating the gas, replacing the meter, checking for leaks, documentation, programming and relighting appliances,” he said.

Lac La Biche County will notify property owners where changeouts are required, either by phone or by door knocking.

“An appointment can be accommodated during regular business hours, however, if the meter is replaced without the homeowner present, a notice will be left at the door with after-hours contact information to get help with relighting appliances, if necessary,” said St. Jean.

Residents who have questions or concerns about gas meter checkups can contact the municipality at 780-623-6730.
