LAC LA BICHE - Lac La Biche’s Main Street is expected to be fully reopened by Sept. 8, according to Alex Fuller, interim communications lead for marketing, communications, and engagement for Lac La Biche County.
In late April, work on the third and final phase of the $32.5 million Main Street revitalization project got underway, with orange steel barricades going up to block off a section of 101 Avenue in the hamlet of Lac La Biche between 101 Street and 100 Street.
The makeover of Lac La Biche’s main street, which has been ongoing since 2021 and spans 101 Avenue from 100 to 103 Street, involves the replacement of underground utility lines, the addition of benches, landscape beds, new trees, as well as updated street lighting.
“There will still be short-term disruptions as crews finish the final asphalt lifts, warranty repairs and other wrap-up tasks, some of which will extend into 2026,” Fuller said.
Fuller continued by saying that Lac La Biche County officials would like to thank community members for their patience and support throughout the construction project.
“This project has been a massive undertaking, with a lot of work happening both above and below ground, but we’ve successfully created a safer, more welcoming and more visually appealing Main Street for everyone,” he said.
The original aim of the project was replacing aging water and sewer lines. With new and improved utilities now in place, the municipality also took the opportunity to give Lac La Biche’s downtown core a new look and feel, rather than just putting everything back the way it was.
“Combined with the recent redevelopment of Richard & Devonian Park and the ongoing work to enhance McArthur Park, this project represents a significant investment in our community,” Fuller stated.
