LAC LA BICHE – From July 17 to Sept. 25, the Lac La Biche Museum will be hosting a special summer exhibit at the Bold Centre.
According to Tara Jacklin, curator of the Lac La Biche Museum, the exhibit features two displays, ‘Pelican Islands’ and ‘Prehistoric Mammals.’
Prehistoric Mammals was developed last year by one of the museum’s summer students. This part of the exhibit features interactive profiles on prehistoric mammals that walked the Earth millions of years ago.
“As we work a year in advance, the displays the summer students develop are worked into the schedule for the next year,” Jacklin explained.
The museum likes offering summer students the chance to cultivate their own projects. This gives them a chance to grow their museum portfolio if they choose to continue working in the industry.
“However, sharing knowledge with the public is a skill useful for many areas of work, so it’s a win-win,” Jacklin said.
The Pelican Island display, which was put together by Jacklin, was largely inspired by a magazine article she found in the museum collection written by John Patrick Gillese, a well-known Alberta writer. Pelican Island focuses on American White Pelicans who live on the island inside in Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. The exhibit includes historic photos and information about the birds.
“This article was featured in a Pow Wow booklet from the 1960s,” Jacklin stated. “I thought it was a neat little article and photograph collection.”
According to Jacklin, the Lac La Biche Museum has two window displays at the Bold Centre located under the main staircases that are switched out every couple of months. These display windows currently house the museum’s summer exhibit.
“Visitors have two months to enjoy these displays before we change them out,” she said.
