Lac La Biche Provincial Building renovations scheduled to be done in March

The Lac La Biche Provincial Building has been going through an $8.5 million renovation project to improve efficiencies. The renovations on the over 40-year-old structure is expected to be completed this March.

The Lac La Biche Provincial Building has been going through an $8.5 million renovation project. The over 40-year-old structure housing a single provincial courthouse alongside Alberta Health Services (AHS), Alberta Forestry and several other provincial departments, is aging and lacks efficiencies.

“Due to the age of the building envelope, temperatures were inconsistent throughout the building,” said Benji Smith, press secretary for the Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure.

The four-phase project that began last May is “expected to be complete by March 2023,” Smith added.

The three completed phases for the project so far have included exterior and interior renovations to improve temperatures and future emissions, he said.

“Windows were replaced, additional insulation was added to the exterior walls, and new exterior cladding was installed, which resulted in improved thermal performance of the building and reduction of GHG emissions while maintaining a comfortable building environment as an additional benefit,” said smith

The renovations were initially announced in May of 2020 with total costs estimated at $2.5 million, but the price has more than tripled due to increased project costs.

Court operations

The single courthouse and provincial services have remained open during the renovations.

The Lac La Biche courthouse handles primary criminal docket cases and family court matters. The region's highest court, the King’s Bench of Alberta, is located in St. Paul.
