Lac La Biche RCMP report busy November, with December focus on impaired driving

Lac La Biche RCMP responded to 453 call for service during November. 78 of those calls resulted in charges, while 32 remain under investigation.

LAC LA BICHE - Lac La Biche RCMP responded to 453 call for service during November, down about 100 from the previous month. Of the November files,  78  resulted in charges, while 32 remain under investigation, says Lac La Biche RCMP Const. Cassandra Calverley.

A significant portion of November's incidents were generated by community members calling about suspicious people or suspicious activity. Calverley said about 40 calls were received from community members about people who were acting suspiciously, causing damage to property or preventing the enjoyment of the public.

"Police being aware and responding of these behaviours is what helps us prevent offences that are more serious," she tells Lakelandtoday.

The November update from the Lac La Biche RCMP includes 26 reported person’s crimes, which related to  assaults, uttering threats and harassment. The update also shows 46 property crimes, including thefts of vehicles, frauds, and break and enter.

December watch

Moving into December, Lac La Biche RCMP are continuing to encourage community members to take an active role in crime prevention by calling into the local detachment or using 911. Every month the RCMP has selected two crime prevention priorities to draw attention to. In December they are theft of mail and impaired driving.

Impaired drivers nabbed

The impaired driving focus was highlighted on Saturday December 3 with National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. The Canada-wide initiative had officers from various enforcement agencies working in partnership to raise awareness of impaired driving and removing impaired drivers from the road. In Lac La Biche, the Lac La Biche RCMP, Boyle Integrated Traffic Unit, Fish and Wildlife, Conservation Officers and Alberta Sheriffs Highway Patrol worked on a joint operation conducting several Alberta Checkstops on roadways within the municipality. This operation was very successful and resulted in several impaired drivers being removed from the roads as well as violation tickets for open liquor and cannabis, seizure of contraband tobacco and suspended driving related charges.

With the holidays coming up, the Lac La Biche RCMP is reminding the public to drive safe the holiday season.

"If you drink, don't drive, plan for a ride, or have a safe place to spend the night. Have a safe and happy holiday season," said Calverley.
