LAC LA BICHE - A Lac La Biche local is now the interim president of Alberta’s Green Party.

Brian Deheer, who was previously the vice-president for the Green Party, has recently been announced as the new president after Cass Romyn, who had been the president since November 2019, stepped down due to personal circumstances. Deheer says the new position will bring on some new changes and pressures, but he knows that he has a supportive team surrounding him.

“A vice-president acts in support of somebody else, and the president is sort of the person who bears the top responsibility,” said Deheer. “Although, I do have to say that our executive team is a team of very talented, dedicated, and skilled individuals. So, I do feel that I am not working alone. I have a very good team around me.”

Deheer first became interested in politics when he saw Elizabeth May, who served as the leader of the federal Green Party from 2006 to 2019, during a live national leaders debate. He says that he was impressed with her and as he looked more into the Green Party’s history and what they stand for, he realized that he connected with the party even more.

“It aligns very closely with my personal values and priorities, and certainly a lot of the issues that I care about,” said Deheer. “A lot of them have to do with the environment, and I feel that this party addresses those issues.”

Even though he knows he has large shoes to fill, Deheer is grateful to have the opportunity to do what he can to grow the party and to strategically plan for the future.

“It’s a large responsibility. I have to rise to the occasion, and I will do my best,” said Deheer.
