Lac La Biche teens enjoy day of fun beach activities

The event, which was put on through Lac La Biche County FCSS, took place at the Touchwood Lake recreation area on July 17.

LAC LA BICHE – On July 17, a group of youth from the Lac La Biche area participated in a fun day of activities at the beach as part of the Lac La Biche County FCSS Teen Social Club.

According to Christine Martin, a community outreach worker with Lac La Biche County FCSS, the youth were at Touchwood Lake for the event. Touchwood Lake is located off of Highway 881 about 45 kilometres north of the hamlet of Lac La Biche.

“We took 30 teens out to the campground day use area and went swimming, played volleyball on the beach, played man-tracker through the trails and had a hot dog and s’more roast for supper,” Martin said.

During their time at Touchwood Lake, the teens also had the opportunity to try water colour painting at a station set up by two staff from Alberta Parks.

Teen Social Club is a weekly summer program where young people between the ages of 13 and 18 take part in activities that are held in Lac La Biche and the surrounding area.

The purpose of the program is to make sure teens stay connected with other people their own age over the summer.

“It’s also a great way for younger teens to make friends before entering high school . . . It helps with the transition because they can meet people over the summer that they can connect with in the new school year,” Martin explained. “Each time they come to a Teen Social Club event, they are learning how to communicate.”

Martin added, “We try to have a wide variety of things for teens because everyone has different interests, but we also know it’s great for youth to try something new as well, so we always encourage all of them to occasionally step a bit out of their comfort zone and do something they may have never done before."

Jayden Tipper was one of the youth who participated in the Teen Social Club event at Touchwood Lake.

“I liked roasting my own hot dogs and marshmallows,” Tipper said.
