Lac La Biche W. J. Cadzow Hospital auxiliary celebrates 55 years of service

Founding members continue to work with long-serving group of hospital helpers

LAC LA BICHE - For just over half a century, the William J. Cadzow Hospital Auxiliary has been a mainstay in Lac La Biche, with members dedicated to raising funds for the community hospital.

Auxiliary president Marian Kuncio explained that the origins of the local charitable organization date back to 1968, when charter members launched a fundraising initiative by setting up a small cupboard on a wall of the old hospital where patients and visitors could purchase items. In more recent decades, the auxiliary has garnered much of its donations through the gift shop and vending machine inside the lobby of the Lac La Biche Health Unit.

“We sell a lot of baby clothing, chocolate bars, nuts, jewelry, as well as kits containing toothpaste, shaving cream, and other essentials,” she said, adding that patients often lack these items upon being admitted to hospital. “These kits are either made up by members or purchased from a supplier.”

The auxiliary’s endeavors to provide financial assistance to the local hospital have without question been very successful, enabling the hospital to purchase several pieces of equipment, including air mattresses, a heart monitor machine, as well as chairs and furniture for the waiting room.

June 21 recognition

Being in the business of helping others for 55 years is a remarkable milestone indeed, and on June 21, past and present members will be recognized for their hard work and dedication at a special ceremony at the Lac La Biche Senior’s Center. During the celebration, which includes tea, lunch and speeches, charter members will be presented with flowers, while everyone else receives carnations.

“Some of our charter members are still involved with the auxiliary, including Olive Skakum, Freda Phillips, Laurette Doucette, and Mary Teslin,” Kuncio stated.

Looking back, Kuncio says that being a member of the William J. Cadzow Hospital Auxiliary has been a very interesting, enriching experience.

“I have met some truly amazing people who are great to work with,” she affirmed. “There is an incredible commitment on the part of the ladies, who take the extra time to do the shopping and fundraising.”
