The ice road from the Mission area to Poplar Point opens this week.

LAC LA BICHE - An icy seasonal cut-across between the Mission area and Poplar Point is open this week for rural Lac La Biche County motorists.

Lac La Biche County officials were reporting last Friday that the ice road from the Range Road 145 boat launch to the Range Road 144 boat launch is "thick enough to open." That message was followed with a clarification that a little work would first need to be done on some ice heaves near the ice road entrances — and that the boat launch sites may be temporarily closed "as the week starts."

"Starting Jan. 11, staff may need to restrict traffic or temporarily close the boat launches," says the recent notice.

Ice depths along the ice road have been monitored over the last several weeks and municipal staff will continue to check readings through the season. The road does have a speed limit of 30 kph and motorists are urged to use caution.
