Moment of silence for earthquake victims

Lac La Biche County council offers thoughts to victims of massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria

LAC LA BICHE - On behalf of area residents, Lac La Biche County councillors offered a moment of silence at their Tuesday council meeting for the victims of Monday's earthquakes across Turkey and Syria.

An estimated 15,000 people have been killed following the quakes that destroyed communities along a 200-kilometre fault line in the Mediterranean countries. The initial death-toll and damage from the 7.8 magnitude quake and a 7.5 magnitude after-shock was spread across a massive region that includes Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Cyprus, Georgia, Jordan and Armenia. The epi-centre of the first quake was said to be about 100 kilometres north of Aleppo, Syria.

"I would like to ask that we stand for a moment of silence for the people who have lost their lives in Turkey and Syria," said Lac La. Biche County Coun. John Mondal at the start of Tuesday's regular council meeting.

Council members, staff and guests in the council chambers stood.

"It is another reminder of the tragedies that are going on around the world, and how fortunate we are to live in an area we call home," said Lac La Biche County Mayor Paul Retutov.

In the days following the quakes, searchers were still finding survivors in the rubble of cities and towns, but the death-toll is expected to rise significantly.
