Peace Officer's role to be looked at by council

The Lac La Biche County Peace Officers have been the focus of public meetings and discussions over the past month, after a resident’s complaint against a peace officer sparked an investigation by county senior administration.

The spotlight on the municipal officers prompted Lac La Biche County Coun. Aurel Langevin to raise the issue at last week’s policy and priorities meeting, saying council “need to provide leadership on this.”

It was something administration was looking into, said director of community services Maurice Brousseau, but they were waiting until after the investigation was completed before bringing a presentation to council. That could be as late as the end of June.

But the need for council to discuss the role of protective services had nothing to do with the current investigation, said Coun. Tim Thompson, adding there was a need to review the mandate of protective services.

Council agreed to hold a strategic session to review the mandate of the peace officers, and will be given potential dates at Tuesday’s council meeting.
