Police say everyone should be evacuated from Fort McMurray - but they're not.

One man has been arrested after police conducting regular patrols of the evacuated northern city responded to a break-and-enter call. Another elderly man was located and safely evacuated, along with his dog, and another family was found on door-to-door searches, still in their home because they believed there was no danger. The family, and their dog, were safely evacuated.

"People need to understand that evacuation orders are issued for a reason, and that not leaving puts them and emergency responders at unnecessary risk," said RCMP Inspector Gibson Glavin.

RCMP say there may be many pets that were not rescued in time for the evacuation. They are urging the public not to use the 911 system, but instead to contact a specialized unit of search and rescue personnel tasked with pet rescue.

The RCMP is asking that evacuees concerned about pets follow the instructions of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo by contacting the Supporters of Alberta Animal Rescues at https://supportersofabrescues.com/. RCMP search and rescue personnel will do what they can to assist pets they come across.
