Officials at Portage College are hoping to show high school students from the region that the world is their oyster at their upcoming Career Expo on April 21. The event will have representatives from post-secondary institutions and employers from all across Alberta showing high school students from northeastern region of the province what they have to offer.

The goal of the event is to expose young students and community members to as many different opportunities as possible, and give hem a chance to learn more about what might suit or interest them.

Students from J. A. Williams High School, école Plamondon and école Beauséjour, along with students from Boyle, Vilna, and the St. Paul area will be making the trip to Lac La Biche for the event. Several companies and post-secondary schools will be there to greet them, including Devon, Lac La Biche County, Canadian Natural, Community Futures, Concordia College, NAIT, Trinity College, Keyano College, and Portage.

Meredith Allan, marketing specialist and community recruitment liason with Portage College, said the event is a way to showcase opportunities in northern Alberta.

“By bringing everyone up here, we’ re showcasing the north, we’ re showcasing what we have at Portage College, our proud roots in the north, and how many possibilities to stay north, or actually live here at some point in their life,” she said.

While the goal of the Expo is to show students what their options are, Allan is also hoping to highlight the importance of community partnerships to those in attendance. The event itself is being held in partnership with Alberta Infohub, Canadian Natural, Lac La Biche County, the Village of Boyle, Emloyabilities, Alberta Works, and J. A. Williams High School.

“Without those partners, this event wouldn’ t happen,” she said. “It takes a whole community to send one student to school, and I want to teach that to students.”

The event gets underway at 4pm on Tuesday at Portage College, and is open to the public.
