Portage College set to host CanoeFest

Portage College officials are hoping to show their new and returning students some good old-fashioned Northern Alberta hospitality at CanoeFest, a free community concert that will double as the college’ s orientation event on Wednesday evening.

The event, which takes place from 5-9 pm at the college’ s Lac La Biche campus soccer fields, will feature music by musicians from around the region, as The Torpedos, Chad Winger, Bloomfields, Dave Ashworth, and The Berlands, will take to the stage. Meredith Allan, marketing specialist with Portage College, said the event will be a good way to show new students what the community is all about.

“What we’ re trying to do is bring the community and Portage College students, especially the ones who are new to the area, together with music,” she said. “Music really brings people together in a way that’ s enjoyable for all ages.”

Allan added that the CanoeFest was organized in the spirit of Portage’ s recent efforts to promote the northern lifestyle and a tight-knit community feel a student might experience while attending the college.

“I think we’ re just promoting local talent, the north, the communities that make up Lac La Biche County, and how everything is run with community engagement and partnerships,” she said.

There will be food and drinks available for purchase at the event as well, courtesy of Tara’ s Pizza and the college’ s recruitment department. Concert-goes should bring their own lawn chairs and blankets.
