With a successful Solstice Beer Experience under its belt, the Rotary Club is ready to switch its focus from barley to grapes.

The Rotary Club's third-annual Solstice Beer Experience raised more than $2,000 for scholarships, and organizer Brydon Ward said that the club's next big project will be its annual wine tasting and auction in October.

The Beer Experience brought more than 60 people to MacArthur Place to sample about 40 different beers, provided by Fozey Fyith and the Liquor Stop.

"We had a wonderful crowd, a lot younger than you would get at a wine tasting," Ward said. "Certainly the job that Fozey did in bringing in a huge array of different beers really attracted the younger set and also some cultured beer drinkers also."

Ward said they'll be looking at some tweaks next year, but he said the event is popular.

"It was very well received, people want to keep it going and so we want to keep it going," Ward said, noting that drinkers didn't opt for as much volume as past editions. "It wasn't because of the quality. I think that the beers that were set up there we were quite happy with."

The wine tasting in October will feature wine and hors d'oeuvres, as well as a live auction and silent auction.

"That's our really big fundraiser, we get about $9,000 out of that. But all of it goes back to our youth," he said. "(Tables will) differ by country. It'll either be by wine groupings or country groupings or representatives that are there that want to promote their own wines," he said.

Ward thanked the Liquor Stop and Lac La Biche County for the use of the space after Council waived the fee for rent in the MacArthur Room.
