Le Club de la Radio Communautaire de Plamondon-Lac La Biche — CHPL 92.1 FM — is hosting their first Closet Singers show at Plamondon's Philip Menard Centre on Friday, March 29.

A group of eight — and maybe more — singers will be singing in public for the very first time at the fun event.  Some have been hiding their talents for a long time. The youngest singer on the list is 25, and the oldest is 65, says Tracy Lord, the Treasurer of the Board of Directors at the local Francophone radio station — she is the one who initially came up with the idea.

"It's the first time we are doing this. We have found some singers from the area who are going to sing in public for the first time. It's kind of like a game show. For their first performance, the singers are going to perform behind a curtain and the audience has to guess who the singer is," she explained. "For the second performance, the singers will pull away the curtain and sing in front of the audience — if they are ready.:;

The nice thing with this event, says Lord, is that it caters to the shy and super-shy.

"If they're not ready to come out from the curtain, they don't have to and they can come out from behind the curtain next year."

The event is not only a creative way to showcase local talent, but will also serve as a fundraiser for the local radio station. The proceeds from the funds raised will mainly go towards the radio station's operating expenses.

"We are non-profit so we need to raise funds to pay our bills, pay for expenses , admin fees , accountants and a major one is the radio towers to broadcast on FM waves. It costs $6000 per year for us to broadcast in a 90 Kilometres radius from Plamondon," said Lord.

Staff and organizers from the radio station are hoping a wide radius of residents come to their event.  If it turns out to be successful, there will be more shows to follow, say organizers. Lord along with the rest of the local radio station's staff welcome anyone and everyone to join.

The event is part of Plamondon's continuing event schedule during National Francoponie Month — but you don't have to sing 'en francais' if you don't want to.

"We would want everyone to join us. It's a bilingual show, so we ask everyone to come out and support the singers," said Lord.

Tickets are only $15 . There may be tickets available at the door for $20 — but those aren't guaranteed if the show is sold out.

The show starts at 7 PM.
