Students enjoy first group events at schools since COVID

Return to public events is music to the ears for school officials, families and students

LAC LA BICHE - School sporting events with fans in the stands and the recent Music Monday at Aurora Middle School, performed with hundreds of family members watching, are a welcome return to "normal", say local school officials.

"Just like our return to athletic competitions, it was fantastic to see so many smiles and laughs as we celebrate the fine arts learning at Aurora," said school principal Conal Donovan.

The Music Monday event at the Lac La Biche middle school was part of a nation-wide school program to showcase the musical talents of students and the work of school staff. In Lac La Biche, it was the first in-person event open to the public since 2020 when the global COVID pandemic restricted group events. The performance saw hundreds of people sitting in the school's gymnasium where Aurora Thunderbird sports teams and school groups had not gathered formally for two full school years.

"We are grateful for our community coming together again," Donovan told Lakeland This Week, crediting the hard work of students and staff for the hour-long performance that featured Grade 4-8 band and choir classes from the school. "We are so proud of our Thunderbirds and so lucky to have such amazing music educators."

In the weeks since the May 2 music show, the school has hosted track and field activities with all students participating in a group setting.
