SMOKY LAKE – The Town of Smoky Lake is increasing supports for new residents to the community thanks to a $211,520 provincial grant.
This grant money will be used for a Newcomer Navigation Supports Program, which is a two-year initiative that is set to get underway this spring. As explained by the Town of Smoky Lake, this program will strengthen community capacity, improve information-sharing, and promote intercultural inclusion.
According to information from the Town of Smoky Lake, the municipality received the funding from the Government of Alberta, through the Ministry of Immigration and Multiculturalism.
“The goal is to make it easier for newcomers to access timely, accurate information and feel a strong sense of belonging in the Smoky Lake region,” according to information from the municipality.
Rachelle Amyotte, director of Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) for the Town of Smoky Lake, praised the grant from the provincial government.
“This funding gives us the chance to strengthen the way we connect as a community,” said Amyotte. “It’s about building systems that feel welcoming, inclusive, and easy to navigate for anyone who chooses to make Smoky Lake home.”
As stated in the information from the Town of Smoky Lake, the program will be steered by a newcomer navigation facilitator whose role is to act as a “community connector.”
This individual will work with local schools, businesses, health services, libraries and organizations in the Smoky Lake area to ensure that residents, both newcomers and long-term ones, feel welcomed and informed, are able to access resources, and that programs are culturally responsive.
The initiative emphasizes systems navigation, community awareness, and building partnerships that support sustainable inclusion.
“Activities will include newcomer-friendly materials, intercultural
events, and strategic inter-agency coordination to reduce barriers and improve service access,” according to the municipality.
Mayor of the Town of Smoky Lake Amy Cherniwchan also spoke highly about the new newcomer supports program.
“Smoky Lake is a community that welcomes growth while staying true to its roots,” said Cherniwchan. “This initiative gives us the tools to grow thoughtfully - by strengthening the way we connect with newcomers and ensuring every resident feels informed, included, and proud to call Smoky Lake home.”
According to the Town of Smoky Lake, the program complements broader regional initiatives, including the Rural Renewal Stream, by supporting not only newcomer attraction, but also the long-term retention and integration of new residents.
