Northern Lights School Division News Release
(Wandering River, Alberta - September 14, 2015) Northern Lights School Division No. 69 would like to thank TransCanada for renewing its commitment to the Breakfast Program at Wandering River School.
The second year of the successful program, which provides a healthy breakfast to all of the school’ s Kindergarten to Grade 6 students, kicked off on Friday, September 11, with a pancake breakfast served by volunteers from TransCanada.
“The Breakfast Program brings the whole school together every morning and has enhanced the family-like atmosphere of the school,” said Principal Dan Coonan.
TransCanada started the Breakfast Program at Wandering River School in January 2015 as part of its commitment to supporting communities where it operates. TransCanada currently has a camp located in Wandering River for construction of the Grand Rapids Pipeline Project, a 460-kilometre oil and diluent pipeline system connecting the producing area northwest of Fort McMurray to terminals in the Edmonton/Heartland region.

“Giving back to the communities where we operate is part of our everyday culture and has been for over 60 years,” said Wendy West, Director of the Grand Rapids Pipeline at TransCanada. “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Northern Lights School Division and help encourage a generation of lifelong learners by helping students start off right with the most important meal of the day.”
Research shows that providing students with a nutritious meal at the beginning of the day improves academic performance, student behaviour and attendance.
“Partnerships like this one with TransCanada help support the work we are doing to teach our students about living healthy lifestyles, and help them start the day with the best possible opportunity to learn,” said Board Chair Arlene Hrynyk.
Northern Lights identified Health and Wellness as a priority in its 2015-2018 Three-Year Education Plan, including support for programs that promote a healthy lifestyle and sound mental health.
TransCanada also supports recycling programs at Wandering River School, Grassland School and école Plamondon School. Wandering River School is located in the Hamlet of Wandering River, midway between Edmonton and Fort McMurray. It is one of Northern Lights School Division’ s smallest schools, with 22 students in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Northern Lights School Division No. 69 provides a quality public education program with enhanced learning opportunities to approximately 6,100 students in 28 schools in northeastern Alberta.
