You gotta go round - roundabout replaces Lac La Biche intersection

Next phase of Main Street construction project blocks downtown's busiest intersection

LAC LA BICHE - Travellers through the Lac La Biche downtown will have to find alternative routes around the ongoing construction project that will eventually see more than five blocks of the community's Main Street upgraded.

The current phase of the three-year construction project has now closed down the community's main downtown intersection, blocking traffic turning towards a major grocery store, a furniture retailer and a bank. The construction zone, part of a $32.5 million project that will see underground utilities upgraded, pavement and sidewalks replaced and decorative surface features added, was expanded on Wednesday morning to include the intersection at 101 Avenue and 101 Street.

The intersection is now blocked by construction fencing that runs down to 102 Street, A new traffic circle was installed Wednesday morning on 101 Avenue just east of the intersection. A similar traffic disruption took place in 2023 during the last phase of the construction.

The current construction phase is expected to have the area blocked until the end of October.

Traffic detour signs will help to re-route motorists around the construction area. Signs are also in place directing motorists to downtown parking for the businesses that are continuing to operate within the construction zone.
