AHS asks Albertans to support food banks instead of dropping off food to healthcare workers

"Although we cannot accept your donations of food, Alberta’s food banks can. We ask you to please pass your kindness on to them."

While many Albertans are eager to offer their thanks to healthcare workers during the current pandemic, Alberta Health Services has some tips and rules around what people can and cannot do, while keeping everyone's safety and wellbeing in mind.

"Our health care teams often work with people who have compromised immune systems, which is why we need to be extra careful with what we can accept from outside sources," reads a statement received from AHS Interim Communications Director, North Zone, Shelly Willsey.

Speaking specifically to food donations that are sometimes dropped off at healthcare facilities, such as baked goods, Willsey says they cannot be accepted by staff, but she offers an alternative.

"Although we cannot accept your donations of food, Alberta’s food banks can. We ask you to please pass your kindness on to them. Many Albertans are turning to their food banks for support right now. We reached out and spoke to many of our provincial food banks today, and they are all in need of your help," reads the statement, received on March 26.

Although monetary donations are preferred so food banks can buy what they need and at a bulk rate, Albertans can also donate non-perishable food items. AHS recommends Albertans connect with local food banks to see how they can help.

Also, "If you want to reach out to healthcare workers directly, you can share your thanks, thoughts of encouragement or other words of kindness to show your gratitude and support through thanksforcaring.ca."
