Bonnyville firefighters head back to school to promote fire preparedness

Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) members and volunteer firefighters stopped by École des Beaux-Lacs on Oct. 11 to teach students about fire preparedness during this year's Fire Prevention Week.

BONNYVILLE - Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) members and volunteer firefighters stop by local elementary schools on Oct. 11 to teach students about fire preparedness during this year's Fire Prevention Week.

Along with BRFA members, three students volunteers who won the opportunity to be a Fire Chief for the Day through a draw open to Bonnyville schools, got to assist with in-school demonstrations for their peers.

This year's Fire Chief for a Day participants were Kain Murphy, Taya Whaley and Piper Lesyk.

"The kids get to help us with the school tours, we take them out for lunch, and then they get some "firefighter training" at our training ground," Regional Deputy Fire Chief Alicia Krawchuk told Lakeland This Week.

One of the schools crews headed to was École des Beaux-Lacs, where they asked students several questions to test their knowledge on fire prevention and proper response to fire emergencies.

Correct answers to the BRFA's Fire Prevention Officer, Dwayne Ethier, earned students firefighting themed toys and books. Ethier also reminded students that they should practice fire drills with their family at home at least twice a year.

This year's Fire Prevention Week them is "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape."
