Bonnyville hosts hundreds of young kickers

Mini Wetlands tourney draws U7 to U11 players from across northeast Alberta

BONNYVILLE - The Mini Wetlands soccer tournament for U7 to U11 teams across the Lakeland attracted hundreds of soccer fans to the fields at Ecole des Beaux-Lacs and Ecole Dr. Brosseau in Bonnyville on Saturday.

The one day tournament drew teams from Bonnyville, Kehewin, St. Paul, Lac La Biche, Cold Lake and Elk Point, just to name some. The soccer fields hosted 100 matches of junior soccer action between opening tournament kick-off at 9 a.m. and the final matches of the day that wrapped up at 5:30 p.m.

Youngsters also enjoyed a skills challenge that offered prizes to the best players of each division for timed drills and kicking accuracy.

Although grey skies threatened for parts of the day, the sun shone on the long-running annual event that took a two-year COVID pandemic pause.

We'll have more photos and some follow-up comments soon.
