BONNYVILLE – On Thursday, volunteer firefighters from Station 4 Iron River and Station 6 La Corey responded to a Medical Assist call near Township Road 630 and Range Road 461.

The call came in around 12:25 p.m.

The patient was assisted by firefighters and medical personnel and transferred from the Bonnyville Healthcare Centre to an alternate hospital by STARS Air Ambulance later in the day, due to the critical nature of the persons condition, according to Dan Heney, the regional fire chief for the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority.

Members of the BRFA are called to respond to emergency medical situations when the fire services are able to respond before the first available ambulance.

Increased calls and pressure on rural ambulance services has resulted in a greater number of medical assists by volunteer firefighters to fill the service gap, Heney told Lakeland Today in a previous interview.
