Curlers compete for the top spot during Super League finals in St. Paul

Co-Operators and Speedee Lube battle for top spot

ST. PAUL – The sound of stones sliding across the ice echoed through the St. Paul Alberta Curling Club as curlers competed during the Zarowny Motors Super League finals on the eve of Jan. 28.

Nine teams from the region, and even one team who came from Smoky Lake, gathered to compete in a round-robin tournament, with the top teams advancing to the playoff rounds on Jan. 27 and 28.

The teams were: Co-Operators (6/2), Speedee Lube (6/2), Franchuk Farms (5/3), VB Insurance (4/4), St. Paul Glass (4/4), Ink Accounting (3/5), Caouette & Sons (3/5), HRC (3/5), and Xtreme Oilfield (2/6).

Ultimately, the two teams that ended up facing each other for the top spot were the defending champions Co-Operators, against team Speedee Lube. Co-Operators and Speedee Lube were also the last two teams standing in the 2022 Zarowny Motors Super League.

In the end, it was Speedee Lube who emerged victorious. The players for the team are composed of Gerry Jean (Skip), Richard Jean (Lead), Mike Bespalko (Second), and AJ Jean (Third).

When asked about the prizes, league president Lance Reszel said that while there is an entry fee for teams, the winning prize does not amount to much.

He said the tournament was a way for curlers in the community to have some friendly competition, but “it's mainly just for fun.” He reiterated, “It's just to have a little more competitive league, but also for everybody to have fun and play together.”

Reszel concluded by extending his gratitude to all the participants, fans, and sponsors who made the year's tournament a success.

The Super League has been going on for over 30 years. Reszel also encourages new teams to come out and participate.
