Dancers to host showcase to raise money for Bonnyville SPCA

On Sunday, performers from Fame Dance Studio in Bonnyville and Lloydminster will be hosting a charity showcase at the Bonnyville Senior Drop-in Centre to raise money for the local SPCA. The evening will have a wide variety of dance genres from classical ballet to hip hop.

BONNYVILLE – On Sunday evening, Bonnyville and area community members are invited to take in an evening of dance while raising funds for a good cause and local charity – the Bonnyville and District SPCA.

Fame Dance Studios is hosting a dance showcase at the Large Hall in the Bonnyville Senior Drop-in Centre on March 27, beginning at 6 p.m.

The showcase will feature performances by all three dance levels including a Fame dance company based in Lloydminster.

Tickets are just $10 for adults and $8 for youth and will be sold at the door starting at 5 p.m. Seniors and children under 3 years old can enter free of charge.

The proceeds of the show will go to the Bonnyville SPCA.

With seating limited to about 150 spots, audience members are asked to arrive by 5:40 p.m. to settle in before the roughly hour and a half performance gets underway.

The evening performance will include 32 dances.

The dances will incorporate a multitude of genres from classical ballet, neo-classical, contemporary, modern, tap and hip hop.

“So, we have got something for everybody,” says Sarah Makins, the director and owner of the Bonnyville and Lloydminster Fame studios.

For the first time, Fame’s charity showcase will involve beginner recreational dance performances, level two performance dancers and the studio’s most experienced level, the company dancers.

“The company dancers are the ones that do about 15 to 20 shows a year. And on their mandatory curriculum aspect it includes shows for charity,” she says. “They really understand the power of dance that can help other people.”

Makins says that when the performers went through the list of charities operating in Bonnyville, the SPCA jumped out because all the dancers are animal lovers and wanted to get behind raising awareness and funds for the organization.

The charity selection was another reason all three levels of dancers will be involved in the showcase come Sunday – because all three groups love animals.

It is also why Fame performers look for cruelty-free makeup products developed without testing on animals, Makins noted.

For attendees wanting to give a little extra, there will be a donation box set up at the event as well.

“We are just hoping for a really, really big turnout so that we can say to the SPCA at the end of the show, ‘Here is a lot of money for you guys to help with whatever you need’.”

Company dancers from Bonnyville and Lloydminster previously hosted a showcase that supported Interval Home Lloydminster, a group that provides services to women and children fleeing domestic violence and other crisis.
