Supporting a healthy sustainable environment is a top priority for Lac La Biche County officials. Through the Environmental Stewardship Awards, the County aims to recognize four recipients from distinct categories with a $500 cash prize and certificate.

From community nominations, one individual, a community organization, a business, and an agricultural operation will be recognized for being environmentally concise, says Randi Dupras, the County’s Environmental Services Coordinator.

“This award was created to encourage our community members to become stewards of the environment and take a closer look at their operations. Such dedication helps increase environmental awareness, municipal beautification, and civic pride in the community,” she adds.

Nominations for the award will close on May 1.

“Each criteria is given a score from one to five, with five being the best. The criteria includes the scope, significance, innovation, sustainability, long-term benefits, and historical efforts of each project,” says Dupras.

Community partnerships

Alongside environmental groups such as Healthy Waters Lac La Biche, a group leading watershed health initiatives of over 4,370 kilometres of watershed space in and around the County, officials have also been creating a monthly campaign with Alberta Parks to reward residents assisting the overall health of the lake.

“Each month, we will provide an easy action that residents can do to help keep our lakes clean, and participating residents will be entered in a draw to win one of three prizes at the end of the year,” says Dupras.

Ultimately, there are many ways that community members can reduce their ecological footprint and support a healthy overall environment.

"Some examples of ways that people can help is using phosphate-free and biodegradable soaps, conserving water use, reducing runoff on your property, reducing waste production... and more.”

Nominate someone

Last year, only six nominations were received by the County, says Dupras. This year, the County is hoping for more community members to be recognized.

“We’re hoping these awards gain some attention and we receive more nominations in the years to come…If any nominations did not win in previous years, then we encourage you to nominate again.”
