ST. PAUL - The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another long-running event in St. Paul to take a one-year hiatus - the St. Paul Fire Department's open house.
Due tot he ongoing restrictions around the pandemic, the open house that was scheduled for Oct. 3, as part of Fire Prevention Week, has been cancelled, according to Fire Chief and Director of Protective Services Trevor Kotowich.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign - Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen - aims to educate everyone about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen.
"Cooking remains the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen," reads a media release from the Town of St. Paul.
And while the open house was often a draw for children, with many of the events typically aimed at educating youth about the dangers around fire, adults are also asked to be mindful.
"We are all at risk, and it is important every member of the community makes sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire," according to Kotowich.
When asked about any local incidents that have occured in the region, Kotowich noted that the department did respond to a small attic fire last week, but "overall, it was an extremely quiet August."
While the annual open house won't be taking place this year, residents are still encouraged to reach out if they require more information about Fire Prevent Week or have questions about other fire safety measures. Contact St. Paul Fire Services at 780-645-4100.
