Franco-culture celebrated from Plamondon-based airwaves

Weekend radio events to highlight Francophone culture

PLAMONDON - Plamondon's community radio network, Boréal FM has a cultural and musical weekend planned that is rich in diversity.

The on-air event is the COVID-altered version of the annual Cabane a Sucre weekend that brings in the spring season in the francophone community.

Alyson Roussel, the director of programming at Boréal FM said the normal events will replaced by some on-air music and culture.

“Usually every year they put off a Cabane a sucre (traditional sugar shack) but because of COVID-19 this year they decided to do a show on the radio.”

The on-air events have been planned in order to promote the French-speaking community in Western Canada.

The Franco Weekend program features musical performances by artists who have made their name in recent Francophone culture, like nationally-recognized singer Crystal Plamondon, regional musicians  Girlz with Guitarz  and the local Sugar and Spice group. Upcoming talents will also be celebrated over the airwaves through the weekend, including local artists 2 Moods, Renelle Roy and Renelle Ray. Traditional favourites heard across the Francophone world will also be featured over the weekend, including the syndicated Zing-E-Zing! show by the Franco-Manitoban artist Madame Diva, as well as podcasts and capsules will be featured.

The Franco Weekend is an initiative of the French-language community radio station Boréal FM, located in Plamondon. The special broadcast will run March 27 and 28. For its first edition, the event aims to promote the Franco-Albertan language, culture and heritage by including Francophone artists from the region, as well as by disseminating enriching cultural podcasts.

“It’s really a special event,” Roussel said.

The music and features can be heard on on the 92.1 FM within the local region, as well as on the station's social media site.
