Comedian and inspirational speaker and writer Phil Callaway will be in Lac La Biche Friday, April 8.

LAC LA BICHE - Laughter is the best medicine, they say — and the folks from Lac La Biche's Evangelical Free Church say they are dishing up some much-needed doses to the community this week.

Organizers have booked a well-known funnyman for a free community performance at Lac La Biche's Bold Center on Friday night. Along with a free night of laughs, they are also dishing up tasty treats for everyone to sample.

"We thought that after all we've been going through as a community for the last two years, there has really been a disconnect socially, said organizer Rob Wicker. "We wanted to do something for the community to bring people back together and reconnect."

The April 8 desert and comedy pairing is planned to take over the Bold Center's Community Room starting at 7 p.m. for anyone looking for a fun night of family-friendly entertainment, complete with a comedian.

"Just come on down," said Wicker. "The doors will be open, the chairs set and everyone is welcome," he said.

The comedian for the night is  Phil Callaway, an author and public speaker with a stage show described as comedy "with hope attached."

Callaway was born and raised in the Three Hills area of Alberta and has written more than two dozen books for children and adults. He's had a long-running syndicated column called "Family Matters" as well as weekly radio shows for audiences across North America.

Wicker says families can look forward to a fun night with uplifting and humourous stories.

"It will be clean comedy with a message — and mainly just a fun time. We need that," Wicker said.

The event is free, fun and open to everyone. There are no tickets for the event and no need to register.

"It won't cost a dime — just come in and have some fun, try a desert too — and enjoy a night out," said Wicker.

Doors for the show will open at 6:30 p.m.

Callaway's community performance in Lac La Biche is part of a weekend tour for the comedian. He will be at the Golden Sands seniors' facility on Saturday and will be presenting to the Evangelical Free Church congregation on Sunday. According to Callaway's website, the Lac La Biche shows will among the first of many re-scheduled events following COVID postponements over the last two years.
