Fundraising bonspiel in St. Paul supports Haying in the 30’s

The St. Paul Curling Club once again transformed its ice into a hub of fun activity, as curlers of all ages came together for the annual funspiel fundraiser in support of the Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society, Nov. 18.

ST. PAUL - The St. Paul Curling Club once again transformed its ice into a hub of fun activity, as curlers of all ages came together for the annual funspiel fundraiser in support of the Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society, Nov. 18.

TJ Wagner, among the organizers of the event, said this is the fourth year the fundraiser has taken place, with 14 teams participating this year.

In the previous three years, the fundraiser event raised $13,000 in total for Haying in the 30’s, between registrations and silent auctions. “So, this year, hopefully we’ll make a couple thousand at least, and get to $15,000.”

Speaking to why the group chooses to raise funds for Haying in the 30’s, Wagner says the organization is a good cause since it supports people fighting cancer. “A lot of people need it,” and to be a part of that is amazing, says Wagner.

She added that it was her first time attending the society’s annual Haying in the 30’s event last year in Mallaig, which takes place over the August long weekend. “It’s just so amazing to be able to contribute something to it.”

The bonspiel format on Saturday was not overly competitive, and the idea is simply for the community to come together, socialize, and more importantly, have some fun.

She thanked everyone who was part of running the event and ensuring its success.

Also, “a big thank you to everybody who came and donated,” said Wagner.
