GALLERY: Desna dancers dazzle on stage and at festival

A full night of entertainment was delivered on April 11 by the Desna dancers.

ST. PAUL - The St. Paul Desna Dancers have been busy over the past two weeks, preparing for their annual festival and year-end concert.

On April 9, the dance club hosted the St. Paul Desna Ukrainian Dance Festival, drawing in groups from across the region. And for the host dancers, it was a weekend filled with gold.

From 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., the St. Paul-based dancers impressed judges and scored at least 90 per cent - or gold - on every single performance. A few dances even managed to hit the high 90s, and earn "best choreography" and "most outstanding" titles.

The highest mark came in at 97 per cent for Ayla Culp and Finn Haugen's Polissian duet. A total of 17 gold medals, four best choreography awards and five most outstanding performance awards were handed to the Desna dancers.

The club's dancers, which includes youth and adults - hit the stage again last Monday night to perform for family and friends.

The nearly two-hour program was filled with impressive spin, jumps, and plenty of smiles. A couple Silhouette Dance School groups also took to the stage on Monday as guest dancers, along with Viter Ukrainian Dancers &and Folk Choir from Edmonton, making for a full night of entertainment.
