Glendon Pyrogy Festival returns to celebrate 29th year

Over the Labour Day long weekend, Pyrogy Park was filled with music, laughter and a massive amount of perogies. New perogy-eating champions were also named at the annual community event.

GLENDON – What should have been the 31st Annual Glendon Pyrogy Festival, was only the 29th after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Nevertheless, community members were ready to mark the return of the annual tradition with many perogy seekers arriving at Pyrogy Park ahead of the 1 p.m. start time.

People from as far away as Cold Lake and Calgary lined up to order the Ukrainian dumplings that were being served up by Glendon School’s student athletes and teachers.

All proceeds from the Pyrogy Festival went toward Glendon School’s athletics department.

Serenading the crowd was local musicians Troy Gates, Curtis Appleton and Deanne Dolstra from the Applegate Band.

A fan favourite of the festival is the perogy eating contest, which sees contestants eat eight perogy as fast as possible in their category.

Winning the perogy eating contest in the youth division was Amelia Winchester from Glendon.

In the teen category, Koal McGillivary from Bonnyville won first place.

Jazmin Tremblay from Bonnyville won in the women's division, while Josh Backer blew the competition away in the men's division.

All the winners received some ‘Pyrogy Swag.’
