Glendon School annual cake and dish auction a sweet success

Glendon School’s junior/senior high Leadership Team, in partnership with Bonnyville and District SPCA, held the 13th annual Cake & Dish Auction on March 30.

GLENDON – The sound of an auctioneer’s voice expertly managing a bidding process could be heard in the halls of Glendon School, punctuated by the occasional gasp, delighted laughter, or claps from the 60 excited participants of this year’s Cake & Dish Auction.

At the centre of it all was a table lined with colourful cakes, cupcakes, and an array of other dishes.

On March 30, Glendon School’s Junior/Senior High Leadership Team, in partnership with Bonnyville’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), held the 13th annual Cake & Dish Auction. The auction raised over $1,800.

A third of the proceeds will go to the Bonnyville & District SPCA, another third will help with the formation of Glendon Village’s new public library, and the final third will help fund some of the junior/senior high Leadership Team’s initiatives, said Annette Dillon, a teacher at the school and the leadership’s team leader.

Dillon thanked all volunteers who helped out. “Glendon School has an amazing volunteering attitude,” she said. “I’ve got tons of [Grade 7 to 12] that helped out.”

As students enter Grade 7, “they’re already looking at the program... saying, ‘we want to do that too’,” she shared with pride.

Several of the cakes and dishes at the auction were “baked by the kids.”

In addition to baking, students also helped with other aspects of the event, including writing the opening speech, delivering the speech, walking the dishes around for the bidders to see, and volunteering as auction spotters.

Dillon thanked the community for coming out, as well as those who donated cakes and dishes for the auction. She said some of the dishes were donated by members of the community and some came from small businesses.
