Glendon School raises over $2,000 at cake auction

Glendon School's Junior/Senior High Leadership Team held its 14th annual Cake and Dish Auction on April 25, raising over $2,000 from over a dozen auctioned items.

GLENDON – Glendon School's Junior/Senior High Leadership Team held its 14th annual Cake and Dish Auction on April 25, raising over $2,000 from over a dozen auctioned items.

Annette Dillon, teacher at Glendon School and lead of the leadership team, explained the leadership team hosts different activities and initiatives throughout the year to teach members various skills and offer experiences.

One of those initiatives involves a partnership with Bonnyville’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and a portion of the funds raised at the cake auction will go toward the organization, said Dillon.

"This program gives them [students] that chance to learn, to give back, and yes, sometimes just to take a break and hug a dog."

Faith Rowntree, who opened the auction with a welcoming speech with fellow team member Maegan Gooler, said this year marks "our fourth year working alongside this wonderful local organization." She explained the leadership team volunteers at the SPCA every week, when possible, on a rotating basis. Their tasks include helping with maintenance, such as cleaning, shovelling snow, organizing donations, and more.

"Part of our fundraising will go toward purchasing much-needed dishwasher for the SPCA," she said.

Rowntree said the leadership team is also raising money to help with transportation costs for students heading to the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, as well as to support the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton. "What's better than kids helping kids?" she said.

Adam Hadlend was the highest bidder for the night. He won the auction's 'meat special' for $400 after a bidding war with Glendon Mayor Nicholas Werstiuk. He said he is proud of what the leadership team is trying to accomplish, and would have "kept going if I had to."

"It's for a good cause," said Hadlend.
