Highway 41 checkstop results in several charges for 31-year-old man

LAKELAND - An impaired driving checkstop on Jan. 26, resulted in a 31-year-old man facing several new charges and being remanded into custody.

Multiple RCMP traffic units and detachments, including those from Vermilion, St. Paul and Bonnyville, were conducting an impaired driving checkstop on Friday evening along Highway 41, at the intersection of Highway 657, near Kehewin Cree Nation.

Just before 10 p.m., "a vehicle that was determined to be stolen, entered the checkstop and the occupants were subsequently arrested," according to information from RCMP.

“Alberta RCMP Traffic is committed to enhancing public safety by reducing harmful and hazardous behaviours on Alberta roadways through strategic partnerships, enforcement, education and crime reduction initiatives,” says Staff Sgt. Marcel Montgomery of the Alberta RCMP Traffic St. Paul/Vermilion.

Darius John Brertton, of Saddle Lake, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine, identity fraud, disobeying an order of the court, and obstructing a peace officer (x2).
