Hockey fundraiser for Lac La Biche Gymnastics Society raises $1,000

The Lac La Biche Kinsmen Club and the 840 CFCW Critters hit the ice on Nov. 17 to support the local gymnastics club.

LAC LA BICHE - The Lac La Biche Gymnastics Society’s fall season is now underway, and as students and participants continue to defy gravity, the non-profit is aiming to raise money to provide more opportunities.

With the support of the 840 CFCW Critters hockey fundraiser program, $1,000 was raised from ticket sales at the hockey game and through donations, said Andrea Ulliac, one of the gymnastics club's board members.

“We’re hoping to support some new equipment, renovations and more,” to provide youth with more gymnastic opportunities at the facility, she says. The funds will make a dent in the club’s $5,000 goal.

The Lac La Biche Kinsmen club hit the ice on Nov. 17, representing the gymnastics club during the game. With a final score of 13-6 for the Critters, the match provided wholesome fun for community members to enjoy, said Ulliac.

“I’ve seen the Critters play before in different communities and it’s a fun event to get people out to support a good cause.”

The Critters’ hockey team has been supporting community fundraisers since 1993 through an entertaining hockey experience against local teams throughout Alberta. The group has helped raise $1.2 million for various projects, said Marty Stevens, Critters announcer and CFCW Retail Sales Manager.

“We support many programs. This is for gymnastics, but we do a lot of minor hockey. We’ve done figure skating, school lunch programs, playgrounds and more.”

The opportunity to contribute and give back while having fun is a bonus, said Stevens.

“I always say we’re like the Harlem Globetrotters on ice. We’re not that talented, but we try to have that much fun.”

The non-profit club is still actively raising funds to grow the gymnastics program, and Ulliac says support is always welcome.
